Mira Murati is a 34-Year-Old Engineer and business executive. Murati served as OpenAI’s chief technology officer before she was given the position of interim CEO after the company sacked it’s co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman. Moreover, she made sure that the engineering team followed the scheduled timeline for creating different iterations of ChatGPT. She also played a crucial part in shaping the company’s artificial intelligence policy in both Washington and Europe.

Mira Murati was born on December 16, 1988 in Vlorë, Albania. When she was 16 years old, she left her home country and journeyed to Canada, where she enrolled at Pearson College UWC on Vancouver Island. In 2007, she proudly obtained an International Baccalaureate diploma after completing her studies.

Murati later decided to pursue her undergraduate education at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She was fortunate to be awarded a Davis-UWC Scholarship, which provided her with the opportunity to further her studies. During her time at Colby, she was selected for the prestigious five-year dual degree program in engineering with Dartmouth College.

In 2012, Mira achieved a significant milestone in her academic journey as she successfully graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering, while also earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colby College. This remarkable achievement showcased her unwavering dedication and commitment to her chosen field of study.

Her professional journey began in 2011 when she commenced her internship at Goldman Sachs. Following that, she served at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013. She also worked at Leap Motion after she worked as the senior product manager for the Model X automobile at Tesla. She was at Tesla for three years. Later, in 2018, she became the chief technology officer at OpenAI, where she supervised the product, safety, and research teams and led the company’s initiatives on ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex.

Following Sam Altman’s sudden termination from OpenAI on November 17, 2023, Murati assumed the position of interim CEO at the company. Regarding government regulation of AI, she advocates for increased collaboration “to establish fundamental safety standards for the implementation of these models.”

In a memo reviewed by news agency Bloomberg, Murati expressed her gratitude and humility in assuming the leadership role at OpenAI after Altman’s departure. Furthermore, she urged staff members who were still reeling from Altman’s unexpected exit, a prominent figure in the AI industry, to remain focused on their responsibilities.
